ARTIST STATEMENT

I have been drawing since the first time I could pick up a pencil and from then my work has changed, adapted and reborn into the pieces you see today. Through my art, I attempt and hope to push audiences to question and experience themes such as mental health, sexuality, beauty, the environment and harmony from within.

My goal is to communicate topics that are important to me through my work and to inspire those around me to make a change, question and extend their knowledge of the world we exist in and the society we live in.
BIOGRAPHY
Born in 2003 and raised in the rural city of Mackay Australia, McKenna first developed her love for visual arts through her mother, who was skilled in creating sculptural pieces. She soon learned how to draw and create art at a very young age and continued to hone her skills as an artist through middle and high school. McKenna has explored themes such as environmental impacts, plastic surgery, self image, and beauty through mediums such as acrylic paint, clay, wire, watercolour, oil paint, and photography. Not only is McKenna skilled with crating art on canvas, she is also experienced in creating pieces on paper, skateboard decks and with glass.
However, it wasn't until her last year that she started to discover her own personal style, which consists of flora and fauna, the weird and fantastical, and the creepy and unique. All McKenna's pieces and works are inspired by the world around her. Themes that delve into the human mind, body and existence fascinate McKenna in a way that nothing else can. Exploring connections between one's self and society, including the struggles, the beauty and the unique are at the forefront of her mind during and out of the creative process.
"I think society has put this immense pressure on us to be perfect in everything we do and create, which causes us to stop making really cool art or trying new things due to fear of not being the best or perfect at it. I want to communicate that the art we create should be for ourselves and reflect our interests - whether its considered distrubing or peaceful to viewers due to topics, styles and mediums."
